OmniRoute is a free, open-source (MIT) AI gateway on GitHub. It connects Claude Code to lots of AI providers through one local endpoint, so when you hit your Claude limits mid-project it automatically falls back to another model and you keep coding.

What it does

Auto-fallback: when one provider hits its limit, it switches to the next available model — subscription → API key → cheap → free.
Prompt compression: it compresses what you send before it reaches the model (RTK + Caveman compression), so you burn fewer tokens.
Works with your tools: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Cline, Copilot and any OpenAI-compatible tool.

Setup

Install it and start it (needs Node.js):

npm install -g omniroute
omniroute

Open the dashboard at http://localhost:20128 → Providers → connect the providers you want, with your own accounts or API keys.
Point Claude Code (or Cursor / Codex) at OmniRoute — base URL http://localhost:20128/v1 and the API key from Dashboard → Endpoints. Prefer a guided setup? Run:

omniroute setup

"Free" depends on third-party free tiers: the README itself says free tiers may require signup, approval or a payment method, and keyless access is not guaranteed. Free models are also not as strong as Claude — great for keeping going, not a full replacement.

The repo moved from diegosouzapw/OmniRoute to cheaper-inference/OmniRoute (old links redirect). The site now also promotes Cheaper Inference, a paid hosted gateway — the OmniRoute app itself stays free and open-source.

Using npm 11+? npm may block install scripts — follow the note in the README's Quick Start section if the install complains.
